Pop Quiz (Who? Whose? What? When? Where? Why? How much? / How many? / How old?)

You are going to
  • do a quiz on pop music
  • revise and practise these words for making questions - Who, Whose, What, When, Where, Why,  How...

Note - This activity is designed to be done as an interactive class quiz with students (individual or in pairs) having access to smartphones or tablets, laptops etc (however there is a downloadable printable worksheet for those who still like paper).



Discuss
  • Do you like pop, rock, rap?
  • Do you know any of the people below?
  • How many do you like? 
  • Who is your favourite singer / group?
  • How much do you know about music?
  • Do the quiz below and find out how much you know.




Do the quiz
A) First, make the questions by putting these words into the correct spaces;

Who, Whose, What, When, Where, Why,  How, How much, How many, How long

Do not answer the questions yet. You can do that in the next activity






 B) Now choose the correct answer for each question

Jump and Slide 3 (Quiz Game - Pre-Int)

An pre-intermediate level quiz game to practise making questions in the past, present and future.

Individuals or teams see an answer and must ask the correct question.
A version for beginners is here Jump and Slide (Quiz Game - Beginners / Elem)
An elementary version is here Jump and Slide 2 (Quiz Game - Elementary)

Students should see the questions / answers "board" projected on an interactive whiteboard (if so they can come out and "touch" the numbers to play) or on a screen.
Students could also play it on tablets if available.


Note
1) You can download the "board" below and print it as A3. Teams throw a dice, land on a square and answer the corresponding question. If correct, they move a piece (as in a traditional snakes and ladders style game) until they arrive at the "end".

2) Or you can do it as revision quiz without the board
It can be downloaded as a ppt file below and adapted.

Play
  1. Click anywhere to start
  2. Throw a dice. 
  3. Move your piece. 
  4. When you land on a square (on your printed sheet), click on the number in the game below and ask the right question. 
  5. Click again anywhere on the screen to see if your answer is correct.
  6. Click the blue triangle (bottom right) to go back to the home "game" page.
  7. Continue until you reach the end.

    Shaun of the Dead - Passive for News

    You are going to
    • watch a clip of the film "Shaun of the Dead"
    • listen to the passive used in a news broadcast
    • do some comprehension activities

    Shaun of the Dead
    Shaun is a salesman whose life has no direction. He has a Mum, a stepfather (Phillip), and he shares his house with a housemate, Pete. Ed, Shaun's best friend, lives on their sofa. Shaun's girlfriend, Liz, has broken up with him so Shaun goes for a drink with Ed at the Winchester pub...







    3) Before you watch
    Vocabulary - Check you know the meanings of these words and expressions

    • be "a bit under the weather"

    • wait for something to "blow over"

    You are going to
    • watch a video about questions people put into internet search engines
    • revise and practise making questions







    1) Discuss
    In September 2010 www.ask.com published a list of its all-time top 10 'unanswerable' search questions.
    • What does "unanswerable" mean?
    • What do you think the questions were? Can you guess?
    • Try and think of some questions you would put into a search on the internet.





    2) Watch
    Here are the results. How many did you guess?

    • with can and other modal verbs

    • in the past?
    Highlight here for answer = With To Be, To Have, the future (will) and modal verbs invert the verbs. You are = Are you?
    With the present and past simple use do, does and did






    5) Practise

    Breakfast with Eric and Ernie

    You are going to
    • discuss breakfast
    • look at breakfast / kitchen words
    • watch a video about breakfast
    • practise asking and answering questions in the present simple
    • practise using auxiliaries in the present simple - Do, Don't, Does, Doesn't
    • describe what you do for breakfast

    Teacher's note. This activity is designed to practise the present simple. By substituting Did for Do / Does it can also practise the past. Students can describe the activity in the past if they know the past forms of eat, drink, listen, make, put, throw, catch, beat (eggs), squeeze, open, close, toss (pancakes), cut, take
