What is beauty?

You are going to
  • discuss fashion, beauty and health
  • practise words to describe people
  • listen to someone talking about ideas of fashion, beauty and health







1) Discuss in pairs / write a list
In 60 seconds how many words can you think of which describe a person's appearance?
Make a note / write a list of them
eg tall, short...










2) Match
A) Choose the right category for each of the words below. Is it Build, Hair, Height or Opinion?







B) Now make a table and put all the words from the exercise and your list in the right column

3) Discuss


  • What is beauty?
  • What makes someone beautiful or attractive?
  • Where do we get our ideas of beauty from?
  • Do ideas of beauty vary around the world?









4) Watch
Watch the clip "Food for Thought" below.
You are going to watch a woman called Mable talk about the first time she came to the UK.
A) Listen and answer
  • Where does Mabel get her idea of beauty from?
  • Why is she scared of coming to England?
  • What does she learn about the British?









B) Watch again and fill in the gaps in the sentences










5) Discuss
  • Why does Mabel think that beauty is what she sees in the magazines?
  • What do you think “junk in the trunk” means? Junk = rubbish. Trunk (American) = the place where you put the bags in a car (boot in UK English). Can you guess what she means when describing people?
  • Why do you think it is easier for an African to eat well and be healthy than for the British?
  • Is it easy to eat healthily in your country? 
  • Do you eat healthily?
  • She says "the magazines show what the British want to look like."  Do you think this is true for all nationalities?
  • Why do we want to look like the people in the magazines?
  • Why does Mabel think she is lucky at the end?







6) Do the crossword

7) Play a game
20 questions.
Someone in the class thinks of a famous person. The others ask Yes / No questions to guess the name of the person.
- Is it a man? Yes it is
- Is he tall? - Yes he is.
- Has he got long hair? Yes he has

Continue until you guess. If you can't guess in 20 questions you lose!








8) Discuss / Write

A) In Pairs. Describe someone. Talk about their appearance and their personality. Don't say their name. Read your description to your partner or to the class. Can they guess who you are describing?


B) - IELTS
  • The Fashion and clothing industry is becoming increasingly important in modern society. Is this a good or bad thing?
  • Eating a balanced diet is the most important factor for a healthy life. To what extent do you agree?

What is the weight of the human race?

You are going to
  • talk about obesity, eating and health
  • read a text and do a gap-fill (with differentiated options for FCE and IELTS students)
  • listen to a radio discussion on obesity and do a true / false exercise
  • look at / listen to some comments by Jamie Oliver on solutions to the obesity problem and do a gap-fill exercise
  • write an IELTS style question on the subject of obesity, food and health

  • Do you have a healthy diet?
  • What is a healthy / unhealthy diet?
  • Do some nations have better diets than others?












2) Watch
In 2009 www.globalpost.com compiled a list of the Top 10 Fattest Countries in the world based on national health surveys WHO compiled between 2000 and 2008.
  • What countries do you think were on the list?

    Supersize Me!

    You are going to 
    • watch a clip from the film "Supersize Me" about fast food
    • do a gap-fill listening exercise
    • discuss the health aspects of eating fast food
    • discuss whether the state should prohibit unhealthy activities
    • write an argument essay based on the topic





    1) Discuss
    • Do you ever eat in fast food restaurants?  Why / Why not?
    • What does “Super size me” mean?
    • Have you seen the film?
    • Is Fast Food good for you?  Why / Why not?
    • Do you think Fast Food restaurants are responsible for making people fat or ill?
    • What would happen if you only ate Fast Food for 1 month?

    You are going to watch 2 clips from Morgan Spurlock's documentary Supersize Me. For 30 days Morgan Spurlock only ate at McDonald's, eating everything on the menu at least once. At the end of the film he examines what effect this diet has had on him.

    2) Before you watch / Vocabulary Check
    Do you know these words?
    OBESE = FAT
    SUED (To Sue) = To take someone to court for damages
    CORONARY = Heart attack
    JOINTS = Restaurants
    FRIVOLOUS = Silly
    STRAIGHT = Consecutively, following = 30 days straight.




    3) Watch the clip
    Why did 2 girls try to sue McDonalds?
    What is Morgan Spurlock going to do for 1 month?






    4) Gap-fill
    Now do the gap-fill. Fill in the gaps with the right number or word.
    Watch the clip again if you need to.





    5) Discuss
    What do you think happened after 30 days of eating nothing but fast food?
    • Did he get fatter?
    • Was he ill?
    • How did he feel?


    6) Watch
    Watch the end of the film.
    1. How much weight did he gain?
    2. What happened to his liver?
    3. What happened to his cholesterol?
    4. Did he get fatter?
    5. How much more likely is he to have a heart failure?
    6. How did he feel?
    7. What happened to his sex life?
    8. Did he become addicted to fast food?

    7) Discuss
    • If fast food is unhealthy, should it be banned or restricted or is eating it a matter of personal choice?
    • If you think it is a matter of personal choice, should people also be allowed to do other unhealthy or addictive things like drink alcohol, smoke or take illegal drugs? Where do you draw the line between allowing one unhealthy activity and prohibiting or restricting another?
    • Should the government or state tell us what not to eat, drink, smoke or do with our bodies? Is the state trying to interfere with the individual's personal freedom and choice? Can these initiatives ever be successful or are they a waste of money?
    • How do a person's unhealthy habits affect the state or society?

    8) Write
    Write an answer to this question.
    To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following statement? "Fast food is addictive and unhealthy and it should be restricted in the same way that alcohol, cigarettes and drugs are."

    Carry on Doctor - Practising the past continuous and writing a letter of complaint

    You are going to
    • watch a clip about going to hospital
    • make sentences using the past simple and past continuous
    • write a letter of complaint practising the past simple and past continuous



    Discuss
      • Have you ever had an accident?
      • What happened?
      • Did you go to the hospital?

       

      1) Watch the clip.





      Francis Bigger was giving a lecture. When he was speaking he fell off the stage. The ambulance came and took him to the hospital.

      What happened to Francis while he was in the hospital?


         

       

      2) Put the photos in the right order. What was happening in each one?

      Use the past continuous.
      eg  1 - C) He was speaking


       

      3) Look at the presentation.

      Make sentences in the past simple or the past continuous about what happened to Francis.

      4) Write a letter of complaint. 
      Now write Francis' letter of complaint to the hospital. Use the model in the presentation to help you.
      • Tell the hospital what happened. Don't forget to use past simple or past continuous where appropriate
      • At the end say why you are not happy and tell them that you want an apology
